Nine-Patch Quilt Block Free Pattern (12 in Finished)

The nine-patch is where every quilter starts, and it is the block I return to whenever I want a reliable afternoon project. This red and cream version uses simple 4 1/2 in squares so the seams nest properly and the corners meet without fuss.

  • Skill level: Beginner
  • Finished size: 12 in x 12 in (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm)

  • Time to make: 2 hours

What Makes This Quilt Block Special

The charm of this block comes from alternating dark red floral prints with warm cream prints in a classic three-by-three grid. Cutting precise 4 1/2 in squares makes the work go fast and keeps your points sharp. Pressing the seams toward the dark fabric lets them nest together when you join the rows, so your intersections stay flat.

Cutting Instructions

For one 12 in (30.5 cm) finished block:
– Red Floral: Cut 1 strip 4 1/2 in x WOF (11.4 cm x WOF); subcut into 5 squares 4 1/2 in x 4 1/2 in (11.4 cm x 11.4 cm).
– Cream Floral: Cut 1 strip 4 1/2 in x WOF (11.4 cm x WOF); subcut into 4 squares 4 1/2 in x 4 1/2 in (11.4 cm x 11.4 cm).

Assembly

Block Assembly

  1. Lay out your nine squares on your cutting mat in a three-by-three grid. Place the Red Floral squares in the four corners and the exact center. Place the Cream Floral squares in the top-middle, middle-left, middle-right, and bottom-middle positions.
  2. Pick up the squares in Row 1 (Red Floral, Cream Floral, Red Floral). Place the right square face down on the middle square, aligning the raw edges. Stitch a 1/4 in (0.6 cm) seam along the right edge.
  3. Open the pair and place the left square face down on the middle square. Stitch the 1/4 in (0.6 cm) seam. Press the seam allowances toward the red squares.
  4. Repeat the process for Row 2 (Cream Floral, Red Floral, Cream Floral) and Row 3 (Red Floral, Cream Floral, Red Floral). Press the seam allowances in Row 2 toward the center red square, and in Row 3 toward the red corner squares.

✅ Checkpoint: Pressing rows in opposite directions ensures your seams nest when you join the rows together.

  5. Lay Row 1, Row 2, and Row 3 face down in order. Flip Row 2 onto Row 1, nesting the vertical seams. Pin if you like, and stitch across the long edge with a 1/4 in (0.6 cm) seam. Add Row 3 to the bottom edge in the same way.
  6. Press the final row seams open or to one side.

✅ Checkpoint: Your unfinished block measures 13 in x 13 in (33 cm x 33 cm) including the seam allowances.

Size Variations

To make a larger project, simply make more blocks. A crib-size quilt needs 12 blocks set in a 3 x 4 grid, finishing at 36 in x 48 in (91.5 cm x 122 cm). A throw-size quilt needs 20 blocks set in a 4 x 5 grid, finishing at 48 in x 60 in (122 cm x 152.5 cm).

Care Instructions

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to dry to keep your cotton fabrics crisp and square.

FAQ

Why do my corners not match up?

Check your seam allowance. If your stitch line is even a thread too wide or too narrow, the math in a nine-patch throws off the corner points. Keep your rotary cutter sharp and your quarter-inch foot accurate.

Can I use strip-piecing instead of cutting individual squares?

Yes. For multiple blocks, cut 4 1/2 in (11.4 cm) strips of fabric, sew them lengthwise into long strip sets, and cross-cut them into units.

Do I need to pre-wash my quilting cotton?

Pre-washing is optional for quilting cotton, but if you mix fabrics from different lines or worry about shrinkage, wash and press your yardage before you cut.

Happy Quilting!
