About this collection

A first quilt that you will finish. Start small: a baby quilt or a table runner takes you through every step, from rotary cutting to binding, in a weekend or two. Big squares and long strips forgive a wobbly seam far better than tiny pieces.

Why the cutting chart matters. Most quilting problems start at the cutting mat. I list every strip you cut across the width of fabric and how many pieces it gives, and I check that the pieces really fit in the strips and that the yardage covers them, so you do not run short halfway through.

Blocks you can mix. The Quilt Blocks collection gives one block at a time with its unfinished and finished size: nine-patch, log cabin, sawtooth star and more. Make one of each and you have a sampler quilt.

Technique help. The quarter-inch seam, binding, backing sizes and batting choices are all in Quilting Tips & Basics, and each one is taught through a small project rather than a lecture.

Questions about quilting

What do I need to start quilting?

A rotary cutter (45 mm), a self-healing cutting mat, a 6 x 24 in quilting ruler, a sewing machine with a 1/4 in foot, quilting cotton, batting and thread.

What seam allowance is used in quilting?

A scant 1/4 in (6 mm). It is the standard for every block, so the pieces match the sizes in the pattern.

What are standard quilt sizes?

Roughly: baby 36 x 52 in, throw 50 x 65 in, twin 70 x 90 in, full 85 x 108 in, queen 90 x 108 in and king 108 x 108 in. Patterns can be made bigger or smaller by adding or removing rows of blocks.

How long does it take to make a quilt?

A simple baby quilt takes most beginners one or two weekends from cutting to binding. A throw quilt with more blocks usually takes two to four weekends.
