Quilt Patterns

3 patterns

Free quilt patterns for every skill level: simple squares, rail fence and half-square triangle quilts, each with yardage per fabric, a cutting chart, backing and binding amounts and the finished size.

About this collection

Easy doesn’t mean dull. A simple squares quilt in a good colour mix looks wonderful on a bed. Rail fence looks woven but is just strip sets. Half-square triangles open up zigzags, stars and pinwheels.

Changing the size. Every pattern lists the finished block size, so you can add or remove rows and columns. Each extra row of blocks adds one block’s finished size to the length; I show the maths for the common sizes.

Backing and batting. Cut the backing 4 inches bigger than the top on every side. For a first quilt, an 80/20 cotton-polyester batting is soft, easy to quilt and washes well.

Finish strong. Binding is where a quilt looks professional or not. The step-by-step binding lesson is in Quilting Tips & Basics.

Questions about quilts

What is the easiest quilt pattern for a beginner?

A simple squares quilt, a strip quilt or a rail fence. They use only straight seams and teach accurate cutting and piecing.

How much fabric do I need for a throw quilt?

A 50 x 65 in throw usually needs about 3 yd for the top (more for designs with many seams), 4 1/8 yd of backing sewn in two widths, and 1/2 yd for binding. Each pattern gives the exact amounts.

How do I make a quilt bigger?

Add rows or columns of blocks, or add a border. Each added block adds its finished size to the width or length.

What batting is best for a first quilt?

An 80/20 cotton-polyester batting is easy to handle, washes well and gives a soft, flat finish.
