About this collection
Finished or unfinished? An unfinished block includes the seam allowance and measures 1/2 inch more than the finished size. A 12 1/2 inch block becomes 12 inches once it is sewn into a quilt.
Measure every unit. Before you join units into a block, measure them. If they are small, your seam is a little too wide; sew a scant quarter inch and press carefully, and they will come out right.
Build a sampler. All the blocks here finish at the same size, so you can make one of each and sew them together with sashing into a sampler quilt.
Ready to make a whole quilt? Turn a favourite block into a full quilt with the layouts in Quilt Patterns.
Questions about quilt blocks
What is the difference between a finished and an unfinished block?
An unfinished block includes the seam allowance and is 1/2 in bigger than the finished block. A 12 1/2 in block finishes at 12 in once it is sewn into the quilt.
How do I make half-square triangles?
Place two squares right sides together, draw a diagonal line, sew 1/4 in on both sides, cut on the line and press. Cut the squares 7/8 in bigger than the finished HST, or 1 in bigger and trim.
What are the easiest quilt blocks for beginners?
Four-patch, nine-patch, rail fence, half-square triangle and log cabin blocks.
Why are my quilt blocks the wrong size?
Usually the seam allowance is a little too wide. Sew a scant 1/4 in, press carefully and measure each unit before joining it.
