Baby & Kids Sewing

3 patterns

Free baby and kids sewing patterns: snap bibs, flannel burp cloths, drawstring backpacks and other quick gifts for little ones, with safety notes for every project.

About this collection

Safety first. For babies and children under three, skip buttons, beads and anything else that could come loose; I use plastic snaps, ties or embroidery instead. Double-stitch seams on anything that gets pulled or chewed.

The right fabric. Pre-washed cotton, cotton flannel, muslin and terry are soft, breathable and survive hot washes. Wash everything before cutting so the finished piece does not shrink out of shape.

Baby shower favourites. A set of burp cloths and a couple of bibs make a gift that new parents really use. They go together quickly, so you can make a matching set from one fabric bundle.

For bigger kids. The drawstring backpack works for PE kit, swimming or the library. For something cosy to go with it, look at the baby quilts.

Questions about baby & kids

What fabric is safe for baby items?

Pre-washed 100 percent cotton, cotton flannel, muslin or minky. Avoid loose fibres and anything with a strong finish that has not been washed.

Are buttons safe on baby clothes and toys?

Not for babies and children under three. Use snaps, ties or embroidered details instead of buttons, beads or safety eyes.

What can I sew for a baby shower?

Bibs, burp cloths, a soft toy, a swaddle blanket or a small baby quilt. They are quick to make and always useful.

How do I make a soft toy safe?

Use small stitches, double-stitch the seams, stuff firmly and embroider the face. Check the seams regularly as the toy gets loved.
