About this collection
Flowers are mostly five stitches. Lazy daisy for petals, fishbone or satin stitch for leaves, stem stitch for stems, French knots for centres and buds, and the woven wheel for roses. Once you know them, you can design your own bouquets.
Make it look natural. Vary the stem lengths, let a flower lean, and use two or three greens instead of one. Real meadows are never symmetrical, and your hoop shouldn’t be either.
Where to use them. Florals look lovely in a hoop on the wall, but they work just as well on a tea towel corner, a shirt pocket or a tote bag. Use a stabilizer behind thin fabric.
New to embroidery? Practise the stitches first in the stitch guides, then come back for the lavender: it is mostly French knots.
Questions about florals
What stitches are used for embroidered flowers?
Lazy daisy for petals, satin or fishbone stitch for leaves, stem stitch for stems, French knots for centres and woven wheel stitch for roses.
How do I embroider a rose?
Use the woven wheel (spider web) rose: stitch five spokes, then weave the floss over and under them from the centre out until they are covered.
What floss colours work for wildflowers?
Two or three greens for leaves and stems, plus soft blues, pinks, yellows and white for the flowers. My patterns list DMC numbers for every colour.
Can I embroider flowers on clothes?
Yes. Use a stabilizer on the back of thin or stretchy fabric, keep the stitches small and wash the garment inside out.
